On July 10, China's commercial space sector achieved three milestone firsts, starting with the first successful launch of the Long March-10B from the Hainan Commercial Space Launch Site in Wenchang City. About six minutes after separation of the rocket's booster and upper stage, the first stage made a controlled vertical descent before touching down successfully on an offshore platform. This marked China's first successful controlled recovery of a launch vehicle's first stage and the first net-assisted recovery worldwide, representing a major step forward in China's reusable rocket technology.

The maiden flight of the Long March-10B marked the first mission of a new rocket model since operations began at the Hainan Commercial Space Launch Site. In addition to validating essential technologies for the new-generation launch vehicle, the mission enhanced the Wenchang Spacecraft Launch Site's capacity to handle complex launch operations.

Reusable launch vehicles are viewed as a vital part of the future of the global space industry. The ability to recover and reuse a rocket's first stage can drastically cut launch costs and boost operational efficiency, offering a more cost-effective and efficient option for large commercial launches and future deep-space missions.

To guarantee the mission's success, the Hainan Commercial Space Launch Site worked closely with teams handling rocket development, testing, and support. Over six months, they undertook multiple preparations, including upgrading launch facilities, testing integrated systems, and refining procedures.

The new rocket model, innovative propulsion system, and never-before-attempted recovery mission presented the team with an enormous challenge. Undaunted, they continually improved technical solutions and operational protocols to ensure a successful launch.

To facilitate reusable rocket missions, the launch site enhanced its support infrastructure and conducted joint recovery drills. These efforts helped establish an integrated offshore recovery support chain and provided essential experience for the routine operation of future reusable launch missions.

In recent years, Hainan has ramped up its transformation into an international commercial space launch center, leveraging its low-latitude position and coastal launch environment. These efforts include the construction of a commercial aerospace industry cluster encompassing rocket launches, satellite applications, and aerospace manufacturing to promote further industry growth.

Industry experts see the breakthrough in reusable rocket technology as a step toward making China's commercial space sector more efficient and affordable, bringing new possibilities for innovation and international collaboration in the global space industry.
