Typhoon Trio to Steer Clear of Golden Week in Hainan

According to reports from the Hainan Provincial Meteorological Bureau, a trio of typhoons, the 17th, 18th, and 19th of the annual season, have formed in quick succession in the north-western part of the Pacific Ocean since September 18.

Fortunately, these three meteorological musketeers, named Mitag, Ragasa, and Neoguri, respectively, will have no impact on China's October Golden Week 2025, which runs from October 1 to 8 and encompasses both National Day and the Mid-Autumn Festival.

Reports show that Typhoon Mitag strengthened into a severe tropical storm on the morning of September 19 and made landfall in Shanwei City in the east of Guangdong Province at around 2.50 pm the same day, with wind speeds reaching force 10 (25 m/s) and the air pressure hitting lows of 990hPa near the center, before moving westward at a speed of 10km/h and weakening.

Typhoon Ragasa (18th), currently classed as a tropical storm, is expected to move northwesterly at a speed of 15km/h with increasing strength and will enter the South China Sea around September 23 before turning toward China's southern coast. As it does so, it will rapidly intensify and pick up speed, with massive cloud cover and an unpredictable course.

Typhoon Neoguri, currently located thousands of kilometers due east of Hainan, is expected to remain a tropical storm and move northwesterly before turning back on itself, having no effect on the island province.

While Mitag will weaken greatly after the 20th and dissipate, Ragasa will bring strong winds (gradually intensifying to force 12 and above) to the northeastern part of the South China Sea from the 22nd onward and heavy rainfall to Hainan Island between the 24th and 25th. Residents and relevant departments are advised to make adequate advance preparations. Inclement weather conditions are expected to improve by the 27th, ahead of the Golden Week holidays.

With the relative unpredictability of these typhoons, particularly Ragasa, we strongly recommend keeping an eye on weather forecasts and typhoon trackers until they have concluded.
