The third episode of Charming Hainan, Enchanting Malaysia explores two intangible cultural heritage arts that have been passed down through time - the Baba Nyonya clothing of Melaka and Hainan’s Li Brocade.

In the Baba & Nyonya Heritage Museum in Melaka, elegant Nyonya clothing silently tells the story of times gone by. Over 600 years ago, when Zheng He’s fleet sailed across the South China Sea to Melaka, some of the ship merchants married local women, and over the years, a unique Baba Nyonya culture took hold. Vibrantly hued Nyonya clothing worn during festivals symbolizes joy and blessings, with the batik that adorns the hem acclaimed as an intangible cultural heritage art due to the exquisite, unique craftsmanship that has been passed down from one generation to the next.

In the high mountains and lush green rainforests of Hainan, another clothing story continues to be told. Li Brocade, renowned as a ‘living history book’, has been passed down through generation after generation of Li women for over 3,000 years. Without a written language of their own, the Li people created unique patterns, a kind of visual language that carries deep cultural meaning. These patterns are both a symbol of the ancestral wisdom of the Li people as well as a testimony to the creativity, hard work, and tenacity of Li women.

New voices are also joining in this ancient tale - reinterpreting Li Brocade patterns through the lens of modern art and giving more people the opportunity to come in contact with Li culture. Tradition and innovation go hand in hand, bringing the ancient past and modern times together and continuing to tell the stories woven into the colorful fabric of Li Brocade.

Clothing is more than just fabric,
it’s a living history book
and a thread connecting the past with the future.
From Melaka to Hainan,
the traces of time are stitched into these magnificent garments
and woven through a culture and way of life that endures. #CharmingHainanEnchantingMalaysia#China #Malaysia #Documentary
